and one more thing, you can use MyPHP or MyPerl or MyLUA as your
(poor man's) stored proc language. but you have to compile them with your 
latest MySQL libraries/sources coz the downloadable precompiled binaries 
of MyPHP/MyPerl/MyLUA are intended for the previous stable version of
MySQL (3.2x)
