i'm confused. squirrelmail is a webmail and not an imap server, right?

yes. Squirrelmail is using imap (I'm not knowledgeable enough how this works) :)
afaik, pop3 clients can access an imap4 server as long as the server
supports pop3 thru an imap4-to-pop3 gateway.

One thing I want to know: If  I install a webmail program in the server will it interfere with my current pop3 server?
BTW, I'm using postfix as my MTA.
Thanks a million!
