Subject: Linux news - SCO's
extraction of Linux
10/07/2003 11:09 PM revenues could be short-lived
Dear Alberto
Welcome to the Linux and Open Source newsletter from vnunet.com:
Investors in the SCO Group beware. Business users are much more
focused on shaving pennies off their IT budgets than in propping up a
company that just might have a case against one or two big hardware
vendors with deep pockets.
SCO is keeping up the PR pressure to try and extract extra money from
whoever is willing (or gullible enough) to pay up.
But Linux's success is due in large part to it being a lower-cost and
increasingly function-rich alternative to the Unix flavours and now
also to Microsoft Windows. If ever SCO scores even a partial win,
these same cost-conscious users will simply sidestep its charging and
go to where costs are lower.
SGI's move to ensure any Unix code in Linux is removed demonstrates
that SCO's extraction of Linux revenues will be short-lived at best.
Then the Unix flavours will be abandoned. And SCO will have shot
itself in the foot.
Peter Williams, Linux and Open source newsletter editor.
