Seen this problem before. S3 cards and X don't seem to mix well. I had trouble 
getting my old S3 Virge to work before. It was on an old Mandrake distro 
though. I think I had to recompile my kernel to get support for that 
parcticular card. That was way before though...

You're on Knoppix though, and I'd think it should be particularly accomodative 
of hardware, since it's supposed to run live from CDROM. And S3 isn't exactly 
an unknown brand. How would one go about recompiling a boot image for Knoppix 
anyway? Hmmm...
