Just some info on UPD's CS programme.

UPD CS programme is not employment-oriented. Meaning, we do not teach our students to
be marketable. Our students get more theoretical computer sciences and mathematics.
This is what companies are often telling us -- teach Visual Basic since it is popular
in companies. Teach this and that. Although we do realize that there are specific
applications that may make our students more marketable, we do not, however
concentrate on specific products (software).

UPD CS students do not perform well in contests - as compared to the previous years.
The quality of the students is declining - thanks to the primary and secondary
education that they're getting. A lot of students are lazy! Add this to the fact that
some teachers often spoon-feed their students or worse [regurgitated!]. Students do
NOT have the discipline. [and yes, the CS department does not train students for
contests - it is up to our students to train themselves. The CS department supports
them by providing them the facilities during training, paying for application fees,
etc.]

UPD CS is geared towards producing computer scientists -- more of the
research-oriented type.

UPD CS use Open Source tools. Although UPD CS is a member of the MSDN, it does not use
Visual Studio in any of its programming. Elementary programming use Turbo C++ on the
PC or vi/pico on Linux/Solaris. [sorry, Sacha, not that many use emacs - but I use
Apple eMac, does that count? hehehe]

UPD CS students are required to learn LaTeX. The students submit their final year
special project report on LaTeX. Presentations are done in PDF or OpenOffice.org
Impress.

See -- UPD CS does not conform to what is popular. hehehe...

Cheers!
