Hello all, I just want to share my successful version upgrade from Mandrake Linux 9.1 to 9.2 without having the ISO images of 5 Star on hand and reinstalling my system.
My workstation and at the same time my test server in the office was running Mandrake Linux 9.1 and I decided to upgrade it yesterday to 9.2. Actually, it was so simple to upgrade my release version because of the "urpmi" utility that Mandrake Linux has. Below are the things I've done: [1] I removed my existing media using the command of "urpmi.removemedia <name_of_media>". You can check your available media by simply "cat /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg" command. [2] Once your /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg is now empty, it's now time to add new media for version 9.2 and you can check the available media and mirrors from http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/urpmiweb.php Just follow the instructions and I guarantee you it's so easy. There are 4 media available for Mandrake Linux 9.2 since yesterday and these are the MAIN, UPDATES, CONTRIBS and PLF. The MAIN media is very important because most of the packages installed in your existing Mandrake Linux either version 9.0 or 9.1 are in the MAIN tree. [3] When you're done and you already have at least the MAIN media, it's now time to upgrade your running Mandrake Linux 9.0 or 9.1 to 5 Star by simply typing these commands: # urpmi.update -a && urpmi --auto-select [4] When it's done, I guarantee you that you already upgraded your existing Mandrake Linux system to version 9.2. The last thing that you will do now is to install a new kernel for 9.2. Well, this is just optional but it would be better that you'll upgrade your kernel. Right now, here are the available kernels that are in my media: - - - < s n i p > - - - # urpmq --list | grep kernel drm-kernel kernel-2.4.22.10mdk kernel-2.4.22.21mdk kernel-2.6-doc kernel-2.6-source kernel-2.6.0-0.test5.1mdk kernel-BOOT-2.4.22.10mdk kernel-BOOT-2.4.22.21mdk kernel-alert kernel-doc kernel-doc kernel-doc-html kernel-doc-pdf kernel-doc-ps kernel-enterprise-2.4.22.10mdk kernel-enterprise-2.4.22.21mdk kernel-i686-up-4GB-2.4.22.10mdk kernel-i686-up-4GB-2.4.22.21mdk kernel-linus2.2 kernel-multimedia-2.4.22.21mm.1mdk kernel-multimedia-smp-2.4.22.21mm.1mdk kernel-multimedia-source kernel-p3-smp-64GB-2.4.22.10mdk kernel-p3-smp-64GB-2.4.22.21mdk kernel-secure-2.4.22.10mdk kernel-secure-2.4.22.21mdk kernel-smp-2.4.22.10mdk kernel-smp-2.4.22.21mdk kernel-smp-2.6.0-0.test5.1mdk kernel-source kernel-source kernel-tmb-2.4.22.21.tmb.1mdk kernel-tmb-enterprise-2.4.22.21.tmb.1mdk kernel-tmb-source kernel-uml-2.4-2.4.22-2mdk kernel-uml-2.6.0-0.test5.3mdk kernel-vpb kernel-win4lin-2.4.22.21mdk kernel-win4lin-enterprise-2.4.22.21mdk kernel-win4lin-i686-up-4GB-2.4.22.21mdk kernel-win4lin-p3-smp-64GB-2.4.22.21mdk kernel-win4lin-smp-2.4.22.21mdk kernel2.4-marcelo kernel22-smp kernel22-source - - - < s n i p > - - - You can choose whatever kernel you like but the standard kernel for Mandrake Linux 9.2 is kernel-2.4.21-0.25mdk. [4] Now, if you want to upgrade your current kernel to either of the kernels I listed above, simply type "urpmi <kernel_version>" and after that, edit your /etc/lilo.conf and enable the new kernel. Lastly, reboot your system. That's it! =) Anyway, good luck to all drakers out there who would like to try upgrading their current Mandrake Linux system to 9.2. --- MARVIN T.
