I'm a long time user of Win4Lin (since v1.0), and up to now (v5.0) I'm very please with its performance and resource usage. But just late week I tried Bochs just to see if I could have a W2K Pro guest OS -- Win4Lin only supports Win 95/98/98SE/ME. I wasn't able to install Win2k since the install kept on complaining about no being able to read the boot sector of the HDD image (yes, the HDD was partitioned, and formatted using fdisk and format.com, respectively.). I was able to make Win98SE run under Bochs though. After playing with my Win98SE under Bochs for a few days, I decided to dump it in favor of my trusty ol' Win4lin for the following reasons: 1. Win98SE under Bochs was executing very slowly. Not to mention the clocks cycles being too fast, which screws up the time, and cursor rate to name a few. (Possible caused by my configuration.) 2. Bochs was constantly using 99% of my laptop CPU. I tried and got the same results on both Mandrake 9.0/PIII-800/256MB, and Mandrake 9.2/Athlon-M 2400+/512MB. 3. Bochs uses a disk image to simulate a hard disk. Win4lin maps HDD to a directory under Link which makes sharing files a lot easier. 4. With Win4Lin I only set 32 to 48MB for the Win4Lin instance, and get very good performance running MS Money, and MS Word. The only reason that might turn you away from Win4Lin is the license isn't free. I believe Win4Lin goes for around US$39.99/license these days.
