Hewo, I've already used a Creative Web Cam Pro (It's a cheap one I guess, and comes with a mini mic) and it worked on all the distributions that I've already tried (Madrake 9.2, Red Hat 9.0, Debian Unstable, ASP Linux 9.0 and even Knoppix) except Slackware (I haven't had the chance to try it since my sis borrowed it). Just make sure that you enabled the USB support in your kernel plus the type of interface that USB Device provides to the Operating System (UHCI or OHCI). I also used the USB OV511 Camera support driver (Please verify the chipset inside the webcam, there are many available drivers in the kernel) included in the kernel (NOTE: it requires "Video For Linux"). You could see the output of your web cam through gqcam or xawtv.
