Was this because you installed maybe windows 2000 last?

What I do when this happens is:

   1. find my mandrake install CD (any good liveCD should work too).
   2. boot from that.
   3. go into rescue mode (no need on a liveCD, just become root
       and get a shell).
   4. mount my root partition (wherever that may be, e.g., /dev/hda5)
        on /mnt or somewhere.
   5. cd /mnt (or wherever)
   6. chroot /mnt (or wherever)
   7. mount -a
   8. cd /etc
   9. then run whatever is needed to rebuild the MBR. i use lilo,
so i just type lilo at the root prompt and as long as the lilo.conf
is good, when i next reboot, i'll see the lilo screen.

before 9, you might need to edit lilo.conf or grub.conf to add the
entries for the windows partitions.
