restart apache. squirrelmail is running under php which is running under
apache. changes to configuration files don't take effect until you kick
apache.

on Mandrake and Redhat, you do that with service httpd restart or
service httpd stop;service httpd start

if you're on another distribution, something like:

kill -HUP `cat /var/run/httpd.pid` might work (depending on where the
pid files are stored). or you might have to do something else, check how
to restart or reload config for httpd for your distribution.
