http://bulk.fefe.de/scalability is a good read. So it seems that the 2.6 kernel has stunning improvements and is far and away the leader among the open source pack.

Also, interesting comment from the Remarks section:  "...since
Linus has declared feature freeze a long time ago, the kernel
hackers on Linux Kongress agreed that Linux 2.6 is actually more
stable than Linux 2.4..."
