[plug] squirrel mail problem

I am installing squirrel mail 1.4.2 on RH 7.2 with Apache 2.0.48  and courier-imap 3.0.3. Courier-imap seems to be running fine. When I "telenet my.domainname.com imap".  I get " *OK [CAPABILITY ....."  plus some other stuff.  The squirrel opening screen comes up without a problem. But when I log in,  I get this

Fatal error: Cannot re-assign $this in /opt/apache/htdocs/squirrel/class/mime/Message.class.php on line 182

Reading  mime.txt in squirrel docs,  it seems the current version of squirrel relies on IMAP to parse the message.
Could  it be an IMAP problem? Anyone seen this error before?
