I'm thinking that you're in the mindset that no computer is safe without
an anti-virus system, since you're new to Linux and straight from
Windows.  The short answer is that no, antivirus software of any kind is
in general superfluous on a Linux system.  If you want an explanation as

On the other hand, Linux servers very often act as mail gateways for
networks containing machines that are vulnerable to viruses, so there is
anti-virus software running on Linux that filters out evil attachments.
This is not "anti-virus software for Linux", but anti-virus software
being run on the Linux mail server for the benefit of other operating
systems that require virus protection.  If this is what you need,
there's clamav (http://www.clamav.net/) and amavis
(http://www.amavis.org/) that you can set up to filter mail on the
gateway so that your Windows clients will always get virus-free mail.
