(Well, smb.conf /is/ a configuration on the linux box itself.)

That's not hard to set up. You need to create users first, and set their
respective passwords for samba. See the man page for smbpasswd(8) (which is
separate and different from passwd(1)). The system manages samba accounts
separate from regular user accounts. In smb.conf, you can specify which users
are to be allowed access which shares. You should see the man page for
smb.conf(5) for the syntax. You might also want to see the sections on password
management.
