I think the  parameter lba32 in /etc/lilo.conf have ofset this by using LBA access instead of of the CHS.
In RH, I just replace the linear with lba32 and I can do away with this setup

/dev/hda1             5Gig                           XP
/dev/hda2 /boot     105Mb                       #RH7.3
/dev/hda3 /           2.5Gb
/dev/hda4             (extended partition)
/dev/hda5 /boot     105Mb                       RH9
/dev/hda6 /           2.7Gb
/dev/hda7 /boot     105Mb                       RH9-second
/dev/hda8 /            2.7Gb
/dev/hda9 /boot     105Mb                       RH9-third (above 1024 cylinder)
/dev/hda10 /          2.7Gb
/dev/hda11 <swap> 118Mb
/dev/hda12 <swap> 118Mb
/dev/hda13 /data    remaining space

Upon installing the last RH, I have put the /boot of the 3rd RH9 (the 4th linux distro) way past 1024 cylinder. And, since all RH9 lilo resides in the first sector of the boot partition, I only need to configure the lilo of the RH7.3 (which resides in the MBR) to boot the other linux.

In short, add the "lba32" :-)
#only posible in RH7 and above, i think

Additional questions: Is there a motherboard limitation in accessing a kernel. Is their a variant of boards that can access beyond 1024 (at least 1040)? Or is it just a limitation of the bootloader?

as i said, you can put as many variants of linux as you want at the extended
partition.. just be sure that their /boot partitions are within the 1024
cylinder and only one boot manager will take care of multi-booting...

fooler.
