i used to have this problem but i just checked the modem initialization
command of kppp to fix things up (e.g. CR or LF/CR).  but i think
dropline gnome 2.6 makes kppp not work.  the logs say that its a session
management error.  i haven't fixed mine yet but i'm using the stock
ppp-go + `route add default dev ppp0`
