Hi

Anybody have any idea why I'm getting a segmentation fault when I try
to configure my wireless connection?

I installed Fedora Core 2 on a compaq 2100. It seems to work okay for
the most part. Installation was not really difficult. The only thing I
had a bit of difficulty with was when it could not auto detect my
monitor type. Luckily there was enough documentation on
www.tuxmobil.com to straighten that one out.

Well, there was one other issue. My computer came with Windows XP home
installed on one big partition. I tried running knoppix and ran
qtpartd to resize the partitions but it didn't take, for some reason.
I got around it by reinstalling windows xp and resizing the partitions
on installation.

I would have tried it another way, if it weren't for the fact that the
day before I bought my computer, sasser had just been released. And
being fairly dense, i connected it to the internet so i could,
ironically, go to www.windowsupdate.com as well as update my antivirus
definitions. So if you have a new computer, do not connect it to the
internet if you do not have a firewall.

But anyway, it's all worked out fine. I got most of what I wanted.
First of all, i know there's a firewall on fedora and I shouldn't be
getting any more windows worms... Like other recent distributions,
fedora core 2 comes with a browser (mozilla), an email client
(evolution), and an office suite (open office). If you're not too
finicky this is already a lot. I just don't know how to add plug ins
to mozilla just yet, but I don't really care right now.

Obviously I can't run Visual Studio, but Netbeans 3.6 runs fine, along
with postgresql, and tomcat, and apache. So in theory I should be able
to get something done with this, which is why i got it in the first
place. The power management features seem to be working, which is
really cool. I was afraid of having my computer melt down, but the fan
seems to be pretty quiet, so acpi should be working fine.

I wasn't really counting on using the wireless connection, but after a couple of days using it with winxp, i can see why people prefer wireless connections... So i tried to install ndis wrapper. Which leads to my problem. I'm getting a segmentation fault when I try to configure the encryption key. Also, I can't change the essid either.

I guess I could live without wireless but it would be nice to have it
if anybody knows how to fix it...

The general thinking seems to be it's difficult to install linux on a
laptop, but with fedora it did not seem that difficult. No more
difficult than installing windows xp... except for the wireless bit.
And that's because broadcom doesn't like supporting linux drivers...

I still have winxp dual booting on this computer, since I still don't
know how to work my camera with fedora. And i don't have any video
playback either, as that's not included by default. But if all you
want to do is browse the internet a bit, send email, it's not a bad
deal. And you wouldn't have to bother with windows malware, which is a
pretty big plus, if you ask me...

Sooo... if you know how to fix my segmentation fault problem, let me
know...
