8 years ago I was using X on an 8MB 486 (Slackware96) with X, fvwm1, rxvt 
(xterm consumed too much RAM and nobody needs Tek emulation) and Netscape 
3.0. What more do you need?  :)

It's ironic that nowadays I use gnome-terminal without a thought, a huge 
fat application that does Xterm's job and eats about 24MB of RAM (12MB 
resident size). Of course having font antialiasing is good fun candy, and 
makes things easier on the eyes..
