8 years ago I was using X on an 8MB 486 (Slackware96) with X, fvwm1, rxvt (xterm consumed too much RAM and nobody needs Tek emulation) and Netscape 3.0. What more do you need? :) It's ironic that nowadays I use gnome-terminal without a thought, a huge fat application that does Xterm's job and eats about 24MB of RAM (12MB resident size).
