Err.... I've tried that.  Besides the problem is with sending mail out coming from my users, not incoming mail.

mail has become erratic.  Sometimes it succeeds often it doesn't.  Most 
of the unsuccessful attempts involve attachments.  The log shows a lot 
of "timeout after DATA from unknown".

I've tried increasing the smtp_data_xfer_timeout parameter with no 
effect.  Really need help.
    

someone's trying to send you a large attachment and it's timing out. 
increase the timeout parameter some more (default is 30s i believe) at the 
risk of having spammers hanging your connections open for a long time.
