Here's an interesting question that I'm sure will have several solutions. I have an RH9 machine acting as a fileserver using Samba. Getting Windows workstations to connect to it is no problem since Windows Explorer can browse and launch files easily on a Samba server. Now we want to connect Linux workstations to it.
This is the easy part. It's no big deal to mount the Samba shares with a few entries in /etc/fstab or with an explicit mount command. But how can we set it up so that if the server goes down (or isn't running when the workstations boot up), the workstations will automatically detect and mount the samba shares? You see, the problem is that we will be having Linux newbies running the workstations and they want the same old point-and-click method of accessing their files. I noticed that the Nautilus can access the Samba shares but can't launch files directly unless the shares are previously mounted. Xfsamba4 (comes with XFce4) can't seem to mount Samba shares reliably either. In the end, it boils down to mounting the Samba shares to each workstation's local filesystem. The tricky part then is how to mak sure broken connections are remounted automatically (or at least transparently each time a user on a workstation clicks on the share icon). I haven't tried Mandrake or Lycoris in this setup yet. Do they have the needed functionality on their desktops? Thanks in advance!
