Spoke too soon.. my AU8830 actually works! (with the stock kernel) just
that the XMMS which comes with FC2 has no MP3 support.

Better yet, the AU8830 hardware EQ works too! my Gnome volume control has 
a scrollbar on it because the volume control is about 4 screens wide..
