What XFree86 packages did you install? I don't have a Woody system
around at the moment, but on Sid /usr/bin/X11/XFree86 (which /etc/X11/X
usually points to) belongs to the package xserver-xfree86. You need at
least one xserver-* package installed, and xserver-xfree86 is usually
your best bet.
