Currently, I'm looking at older, second-hand laptops and/or desknotes.
I could definitely recommend an IBM notebook, brand-new or second hand. Most probably any pre-Centrino model. I'm not really sure if the Centrino wireless feature works with recent distros.
* Distro - I'm leaning towards Debian and Slackware, but if you've run RH or MDK on a laptop, please share your experiences
I'm using FC2 on a Thinkpad T30. This was previously an RH9 then an FC1 machine. I'll probably switch this to Slackware 10 when I get the free time.
* Kernel - I'm looking into using 2.6 and not 2.4, since IIRC 2.6 has better (yet experimental) suspend support, which I definitely need.
2.6 has problems with ACPI at the moment. If you can get a laptop with APM, that should work fine with late 2.4 kernels. As I'm using FC2 on a Thinkpad, I can no longer suspend. It was fine with FC1 and RH9. Turning acpi off doesn't help as APM doesn't seem to work with my T30 and 2.6 kernel. Tried as well with Knoppix 3.4, same thing. 2.4 works, 2.6 doesn't.
Hardware wise, everything on my Thinkpad works. Video is a radeon 7500, and it has 3D support (tux racer!). USB ports work, PCMCIA works. I have a D-link wireless card that works. Infrared works. Network card works. Winmodem works. Audio works. DVD drive works. Only the suspend doesn't (with kernel 2.6).
