One thing that drew me in (and am eagerly anticipating) are the Damage
extensions + the Render Manager. I had been thinking that that
solution would be the most natural.

I believe that the freedesktop.org team has an alternative,
highly-modular X server (based on kdrive). That one is experimental.
The X.org codebase is a fork of XFree86 4.x, AFAICT
