If one has a license to use Windows XP, can he copy the truetype fonts over to the Linux partition, and use these fonts under X?
While I was looking for a way to use Windows fonts on the Linux workstations being used in our office, I encountered a post from a supposed MS employee on a mailing list (forgot which but I found it thru Google). The post goes on to say that if one has a license to use Windows, he basically has the right to copy the core fonts to a Linux machine and use it. It was in response to a question of whether one can use the Tahoma font in Linux (the answer was "no" since Tahoma wasn't part of the core fonts).
Here's the FAQ from the Sourceforge How-to: http://corefonts.sourceforge.net/faq8.htm
The How-to page is here http://corefonts.sourceforge.net/
Note, however, that MS has pulled their core fonts from their website here: http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fontpack/default.htm
However, be forewarned IANAL, just another IT person who got the chance to "force" his co-workers to use Linux on their workstations j/k :)
