but I doubt it can do any difference.

Try updating your kernel to the latest version.
and turn on mmapped IO in your kernel config.

Use jumbo frames. Only if you are absolutely sure that
both nics on your machines and devices(ie routers) between your boxes
support it.

If your ok with unencrypted backups across the network
you can turn off ssh on rsync which will
speed up the transfer.
