Here's what I think would be good picks, aside from those alreadyu mentioned: Free as in Free: http://www.faifzilla.org *THE GNU PROJECT*, available in every Emacsen. I believe It's also taken by "open Sources", by rms. Obviously, since you're now talking about FOSS, I believe taking a look at ESR's "The Art of Unix Programming" is also good reading, especially the first chapters. Indeed, the growth of FOSS these days is largely due to the resilience of the Unix philosophy, and I think no FOSS discussion would be complete without some anecdote from Unix.
