Hello Ronald,

To answer your q directly, an LDAP server is a good idea for
organizations that need to manage hundreds, specially thousands, of
entities in their login accounts. Like, it's better to have an LDAP
server that your mail server references, than it is to manage an
/etc/passwd with hundreds of accounts... If you also have a firewall/VPN
setup and you want to manage access control lists at a granular level
(i.e. from the CEO, to the employees, to the printer, to the outside
consultants), it'll also be a good idea to have an LDAP server. An LDAP
server is also a good idea if you want to consolidate all your login
accounts from several different account databases, into a central
repository that is easier to manage.

Hi. The OpenLDAP Quick-start guide[1] is a good place to start. As for its uses, take a peek at the FAQ-o-matic[2]. Happy exploring!
