Oh, so _that's_ why. My bad, not reading the thread...
Hmm. I suppose you _could_ write a References: header manually.
Alternatively, you could explore ways to manage the large volume of
mail.

I use lots of tricks to deal with the large volume of mail I receive.
First, all of my mail gets sorted into folders. I use threads heavily,
with duplicate subjects suppressed. Your messages get sorted properly
because I've configured my mail client to use subjects if references:
are not available. Then a scoring filter is automatically run,
highlighting messages that mention keywords I find interesting. =)

A single command marks threads I'm not interested in. Replies to those
threads are automatically marked read, and they're darker than normal
mail. I've set up my mail client to still display them, though. If
someone interesting replies, I can still check it out.

I've also set it up to automatically hide long citations (threshold of
four lines right now), so excessive quoting no longer bothers me. I
can also set it up to snip signatures, ads, HTML... It's really quite
cool.

That's what you get when your mail client is hackable, I guess. <grin>
It grows to fit your needs and your wants.
