I use a couple of those, primarily as a backup solution coupled with
rsnapshot in place of using tape. On Linux you need usb-storage and SCSI
support.

As long as the model you get and your computer support USB 2.0, you
should be fine. Performance is pretty good, IMHO. I actually use XFS for
my external USB HDDs.

It really depends on what your needs are. If you need portability for
small files, get a USB ThumbDrive. If you need much more space, get a
USB HDD case and a hard drive. Depending on your budget, you may want to
consider getting the 2.5" variant, which gets its power from USB. It's
smaller and doesn't need external power. You'll also need a 2.5" laptop
hard drive, of course, and those are generally a bit slower and cost a
bit more.
