Reviewing your original post, you said that both drives are now on hdc and hdd, which, by convention, are on the second IDE channel. Let me reiterate: in general its a NOT A GOOD IDEA to mixed two optical drives (more so if of different brands) on a single IDE channel, as both will try to compete for DMA resources and the kernel's attention. That said, the best you might want to try is to set nodma on your CDROM drive and let the writer have it all. I don't know about the *other* OS. More and more my use of it is restricted to games and netcafe Web browsing (and putty ssh chatting on freenode).
