IIRC on modern kernels, hard drive spindown is enabled by default. i've seen it happen on my machine where i'm not doing anything special.
the enemy of long-uptime in commodity boxes is dust building up in the CPU and power supply fans and eventually clogging them. :P just check the innards of any linux box that's been running for a couple years.
