I suggest you use yum instead. yum seems more stable and faster than
the up2date gui. I'm assuming (and assuming too much) that you're not
familiar with yum. The usual "man yum" suggestion.

yum install <package>
yum search <package>
yum update <package>

Not really ideal if you want to click through everything. I'm sure
you'll get the usual "bugzilla it" from fedora-list. Maybe you can see
where it's locking up by running from a terminal.
