That was something of a problem for me too. My solution was to use netfs 
and mount the SMB shares upon bootup of each workstation. That way, they 
don't have to use the smb:// protocol in their file managers. They just 
access the SMB shares as if they were local directories.

Take note you can create a credentials file containing username and 
password and specify this file using the "credentials=<filename>" 
parameter in the mount options in /etc/fstab.

So far it works over here.
