An alternative sata raid card available locally is the Adaptec
2XX10SA[0] series.
They provide true hardware[1] with drivers for Linux and *BSD's.
They also have binary management utilities on linux and freebsd, so you
can query raid/drive status and initiate parity rebuilding on failed
sets.
The 16 port one retailes for about PhP 48k and the 4 port at PhP
21k. Available at Millennium Computer Technology Corporation[2].
This can then be used on a hot-plug SATA chassis[4], the
Supermicro SC932T-R760, about PhP 100k at IntradeCorp.biz[3].
