As far as i remember from my Linksys tech support days, these devices exchange a sort of a passcode before connection. I don't think it's encrypted so "sniffing" might be possible.

Also another concern, these "might" not be work properly with our power lines. Our power line system is known to be so "dirty" because, unlike the lines in other countries where one line is grounded, both of our lines are "high" with respect to ground. Back in college, I've encountered imported power line data chips being fried when connected here.

    Btw, aren't those highly insecure? I remember reading somewhere that by
    its nature, it's almost trivial to listen in on ethernet over powerlines.
