i just noticed --inplace.  which i suppose would work well if the
files are fixed length record oriented.  haven't used it though.
generally, i use rsync over the internet (or over a lan, if the
files are very large, e.g., 1.5GB), so the bandwidth is so much
larger a factor that i ignore disk writing efficiency.
