First check if there's a corresponding USE flag for the ./configure option,
sync first with the tree if you can
/usr/portage/profiles/use.local.desc
/usr/portage/profiles/use.desc 
http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/use-index.xml (online dynamic list of USE flags)

if there's no matching flag
you can add the option by hand, its the econf function of the ebuild
