i dont know the direct answer to your question as i dont use FC/RH. do
you have any issues on using the binary jre libraries provided by
sun/ibm/blackdown? i am using the files installed by the jdk 1.4.x rpm
on my mandrake installation and copied the installed files[1] over to
my arch installation so i can also have java there without downloading
anything since i dont have a usable internet connection at home. both
works as i can launch eclipse on each installation.

now as for the driver problem, if you already have a working jre then
you have to make sure that the java library containing the driver is
in the classpath. some scripts do some manipulation to include them in
the script executable but it is good if you double-check sometimes.

ciao!

[1] rpm -ql is really very helpful! :)
