Hi Orly,

Just because you don't know how to do a certain "thing" in The Other OS, doesn't mean The Other OS is incapable.

What if the Other OS doesn't know how to do something "the right and practically-and-common-sensically correct" way? I can go on about security, but then I'd be wasting my time -- because I'm not qualified to talk about security anyway. ;)

Different OS'es for different needs. No matter how "manipulexable" *ix
is, let us for example try to "manipulex" it to interface with a
biometric scanner. The farthest I could get with that is download some
open-source fingerprint matching software from Sourceforge which takes
 >10 minutes to match a single fingerprint.

I don't see how manipulexible another OS is if you're not manipulating the actual OS... You're downloading *something else* off the net and making it run on your OS.

The biometric scanner can be attached to your USB device, and could be recognized as an "image scanner" -- otherwise, you can make the Linux kernel recognize it as something else. But that's dependent on what's between the keyboard and the chair.

So obviously your argument that *ix is "stronger" due to superior "manipulexity" is specious. There are certain needs that it simply can't fill.

Like what? You have the compilers, you have the API's, you have the libraries, the computer, the keyboard, the chair. If there's nothing between the keyboard and the chair, then there must be something wrong.

When you say OS, you mean the kernel right? I don't see how being a PSOS OS will allow your OS to be "manipulexible" if you don't even have enough resources to "manipulex" it. You don't even have the source code to it!

The Other OS has a tradition of its own. Which you might think is laughable, since Their community has an obsession with bug workarounds and quick fixes. But it's getting there. Having little exposure to that Other Community makes you unqualified to render blanket judgments on their "folly."

There is open source development even on the Other OS. What I think is muddled a bit here is the differentiation between the OS (kernel), and the evironment (other applications that interface with the kernel).

I always thought the strongest "appeal" of *ix to the Geekazoids was
the merry back-slapping (sharing) community, of which this mailing
list is a fine example. Due to the machinations of The Borg, The Other
Community is less willing to share, which is their loss. But it's
getting there.

Is Microsoft opening up the sources to Windows(R) ? Hmmm... I thought so too. ;)

The OS, is technically not inferior, or even less "manipulexable" -- you just think so because you don't know The Other OS enough. And that's something that the merry back-slapping "We is always superior" Linux community should do well to remember.

Example: GDI bug. Allows jpeg images to ruin your computer -- and this is part of the KERNEL!!! Another: ActiveX controls that can crash the system. Please.

If that's not inferior, I don't know what is. At least, that's In My Not So Humble Opinion.
