thanks,  I got 2.6.8.1-24mdk, though.  Found that it still hasn't got
any lirc modules, so tried downloading the lirc sources. After serveral
cups of coffee, I got those compiled for the kernel. I got it working,
the module I used was lirc_gpio.

Now, I need to get it in the init scripts.  It still bothers me though
that the lirc modules that came with the kernel sources were not
included in the compile/make of the kernel. even if I configured them to
be builtin.
