I have a desktop[1] with worse specs than your PC, and I have successfully run Ubuntu on it. Difference, I guess, is I'm running ratpoison[2] as my WM. ;) However, GNOME2 hasn't been that sluggish (reasonable, and usable, not turtle slow), and I've been thinking of moving my Dad and sister (who are the other two PC users here) to the Linux desktop soon.
