Greetings,

Has anyone ever experience the following symptoms with "su" ?

-Asks for passwords but always rejects them as if incorrect.

-There is nothing wrong with the passwords as they still work on console login among other things.

-Typing ls -l `which su` gives the following output:

        rwsr-xr-x  1 root root 23416 Apr 20 01:48 /bin/su

-tried su, su - , su -l <username> ...all experience the same problems.

-tried copying the same binary from the same type of system (RHE3) that works, but still experiences the same problems.

-md5summing the binary with another machine shows no tampering.

-su properly exits with "0"

===================================================================

Assuming that the system wasn't rooted (I don't wish to elaborate ...but let's just say it wasn't rooted). Does anyone here have a clue of what's going on? I'm more used to Debian/Slackware as a distro, so there may be an issue with RHE3 that I've missed. Lastly, the box doesn't use SELinux.

I've searched the web for users who reported similar problems with su. While there were such users, I haven't been able to get much insight.

I'd like to admit however that this post may seem a bit moot in point because the box in question has been reinstalled anyway. Still, the people who were involved (including me) would very much like to have a clue as to what may have happened as we have never experienced such a problem before.

Thanks and more power!
