fluxbox is my wm of choice and i have been using it since mdk9.0 (i cant remember if i used it on prior versions). use the development release (0.9.x) because the stable release is waaaaay outdated. using KDE/GNOME apps will still load the necessary libraries but on a slow machine, every bit of fat removed helps. take a look also at what services are running on your system and stop the ones you dont need. the discussion on this link[1] might be of some assistance.
