John, My suggestion of learning Python is re-inforced. You can use it for almost everything: financial applications (e.g., using Pandas), scientific applications (e.g, using NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib), database applications (e.g., with PlPython for postgres), and more. Runs on all platforms and, as pointed out, has a lot of readily available documentation.
