I have finally determined that the problem is with either USB cable or with the jack on the Mediasonic. Unfortunately I do not have a spare USB cable that will fit in the Mediasonic - it's an H shape with two of the legs a bit closer together. I'm pretty sure the cable came with the Mediasonic, as I've never seen one exactly like it. I do have a couple of USB cables with square ends (from scanners), but they won't fit. The Mediasonic also has an eSATA jack, but I don't have any of those cables either.
Nobody in town has eSATA to eSATA cables, except maybe Fry's (their web site is hopeless). I'll call them tomorrow.
