Cool!  Of course, the warranty for a Red Pro is many years,
while the warranty for a shucked drive is zero years. 
I don't know if Western Digital warranty policy will be
trustworthy in the future, so the actual value of the 
warranty is uncertain. 

So, for half the price, use twice as many drives in a
redundant RAID array, and you will get more data
survivability per dollar, without relying on Western
Digital's future behavior.

My guess is these drives are factory-programmed for 
different speed, access rate. and power dissipation for
different applications.  Perhaps the shucked drives are
the same physical hardware as a Red Pro or a Red, but
are tweaked for less power and speed.  If someone has
time to compare them, I can loan a Red Pro that has not
been deployed yet.
