I ended up using Simple Scan, it was a lot less problematic than Sane. I have a Epson, and an HP, both of them required the download of the drivers, but with Simple Scan, I did so and "It just worked".
I have heard horror stories about scanning and either I have just had luck or it has just been that I got it all right, but I do not think that you have that much luck so must be something else....
