That's really weird. Maybe try mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdd1 and see if it gives
errors?

Maybe the graphical partition tool did something weird when formatting the
filesystem? Or there was an error that it didn't report?

I dunno, I don't trust graphical interfaces any farther than I can throw
them.
