I never saw an empty /tmp after rebooting. Every time I've looked in /tmp
the usual files are there.

Now that I understand tmpfs I see that that's where all files in /tmp
appear. By adding a new line to /etc/fstab to point tmpfs at /dev/shm I now
have two 2G tmpfs-es on the system:
tmpfs 1.9G 8.0K 1.9G 1% /dev/shm
tmpfs 1.9G 32K 1.9G 1% /tmp

And, both opera and chromium once again load and work.

When, why, and how tmpfs was changed from /dev/shm to /tmp I've no idea
becasue it was not a deliberate action on my part.

Thanks Wes and Ben for your help.

Rich
